Short Biography for Mayella Ewell
Mayella Ewell is at the lowest of the low on the social class ladder. Her families home resides by the Maycomb town dump. Imagine smelling that everyday...ew. Her father, Robert Ewell is a drunkard, and gone for most of the day. Mayella, due to her father's constant absences, has to support her large family all by herself. Everyday she watches Tom Robinson walking to work. She secretly admires and likes Tom. Somehow, her relationship with Tom goes from a crush, to rape. Therefore, throwing both of them into a whirlpool of lies and consequences.
Mayella's Testimony:
It was November 21st, Mayella was sitting on her porch. She was supposed to be chopping up a chiffarobe, but saw Tom Robinson coming along and asked him to help her with it. She went into the house to give Tom a nickle, turned around, and Tom attacked her! He strangled her around her neck and repeatedly hit her. Mayella kicked and screamed as loud as she could. The next thing she could remember was Mr. Ewell standing over her asking, "Who done it, who done it?". Then she fainted, and that's all she said she could remember.
I think a theme that applies to her testimony is Racial Prejudice. Everyone in the jury is horrified that a big, husky, black man would attack a poor, little, white girl in such a manner! They don't even consider the truth for a second.
